The real estate business is John’s second career and he entered the business after experiencing both good and not so good real estate transactions during his twenty-five years in sales and marketing with the Eastman Kodak Company. During that time, the Thurman’s moved thirteen times many of which were cross-country. Those experiences provided an excellent foundation for entry into the real estate business. He learned that while every real estate transaction is as unique as the buyers and sellers who are involved, there is a right way and a wrong way to do it. The Thurman’s are both natives of San Antonio. John attended San Antonio College prior to completing a Bachelor’s Degree at the University of Texas at Austin in Accounting. John’s hobby in high school was black and white photography but his love was sales and marketing. After a short period as a cost accountant with a defense contractor in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area, John started a sales and marketing career with Eastman Kodak. That led their family first to Rochester, NY for a training program and then to Louisville, KY for two years in the central Kentucky sales territory. With the end of the Viet Nam war, the Thurman’s were transferred to Orlando, Florida to handle military and premium customers in five southeastern states. With the wind down of the war, the economy went into a recession that severely influenced the premium and military markets. That led to excellent opportunities to expand the photo business into the food market as well as the attraction business. From Florida, the Thurman’s moved back to Rochester, NY for a stint as Director, Instant Sales Promotion. Next came a transfer back to the Thurman’s hometown of San Antonio and more experiences in the food and military businesses. John’s retirement job with Kodak was National Sales Manager, US Military, worldwide. John applied to and was accepted by the Rotary Club of San Antonio, one of the world’s largest Rotary Clubs. He quickly got involved in membership recruiting and development and not too much later the club became the world’s largest Rotary Club. Frank Devlyn, 2000-2001 Rotary International President, asked John to start a new club, which he did. In 2003, John became the Charter President of the Rotary Club of San Antonio at The Dominion. John currently produces and co-hosts several radio talk shows on NewsTalk 930 KLUP that stream live on various web sites. These shows are the San Antonio Military City USA Radio Program, (two hours on Saturday morning) the San Antonio Movers and Shakers show and the San Antonio Business Makers Show. He was raised as a Master Mason of Harlandale Lodge # 1213 in San Antonio. He is active on the IT-Cyber Committee and the Military Affairs Committee of the Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce and he is a regular participant in the Greater Chamber’s SAtoDC Executives and Leaders Trip to the US Capitol in Washington, DC. The United States Air Force 37thTraining Wing has named John as the Honorary Commander to Vice Commander, Col. Patrick Vetter.
